During Nat Turner's Rebellion slaves killed their owners and families. People were scared and wanted to end slavery. Others made more strict laws against slaves. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed so that escaped slaves would be caught. Northerners thought that it wasn't fair to them or the slaves. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act made it so the territories decided on slavery by popular sovereignty. Northerners were angry because there wasn't supposed to be slavery above the Missouri Compromise line. Southerns wanted more slavery. -
The Dred Scott Decision
The Supreme Court decided that Dred Scott was not free and slaves were not citizens of the U.S. Abolitionists wanted him to be free because he had lived in free states. His owner did not want him to be free. -
The Election of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was elected president and he wasn't even on some southern ballots. The South and Democrats didn't want him as president because they thought he would end slavery. The North and Republicans supported him because he hated slavery.
