Pregnancy Timeline

    Day 3

    This occurs three days after the baby is conceived.
    The fertilized egg divides into many cells and passes through the fallopian tube (tube that connects the ovaries to the uterus) into the uterus. The placenta starts to form.
  • Period: to

    Month 1

    This happens four weeks (1 month) after conception.
    The baby starts to develop structures that form their face and neck. Organs such as the heart, lungs, and stomach start to develop. This is when a pregnancy test would show up as positive.

    Month 2

    This happens at around 8 weeks, or 2 months.
    The baby continues to develop and its features become more defined. Eyelids and ears are developing and the arms and legs are well formed.

    Month 3

    This occurs at around 12 weeks, or 3 months.
    The baby continues to grow and it starts to make its own movements. A doctor may be able to hear the baby's heartbeat and the sex organs should start to become clear.

    Month 4

    This happens at around 16 weeks (4 months) after conception.
    The baby measures around 4.5 inches and weighs about 3.5 ounces. The baby can blink and the heart and blood vessels are fully formed. The baby also has fingerprints formed. At this point you should be able to feel the top of your uterus about 3 inches below your belly button.

    Month 5

    This stage happens 20 weeks (5 months) after conception.
    The baby can move, stretch, and make faces. The uterus should be at the level of the belly button.
    An ultrasound is usually done at around this time. The ultrasound lets the doctor know if the placenta is normal, if the baby is growing properly, and the sex of the baby can usually be determined.

    Month 6

    This stage happens 24 weeks (6 months) after conception.
    The baby responds by moving or increasing their pulse. The baby weighs about 1.5 pounds.

    Month 7

    This stage happens 28 weeks (7 months) after conception.
    During this stage, the baby changes positions and premature birth happens at around this time. The baby weighs about 2 pounds.

    Month 8

    This stage happens 32 weeks (8 months) after conception.
    The baby moves often and weighs around 4 pounds. Most women have to go to the doctor every two weeks during this stage of pregnancy. A yellowish fluid may leak from the breasts, this happens when your body is preparing to produce milk.

    Month 9

    This stage happens 36 weeks (9 months) after conception.
    All babies are different sizes, a baby weighs about 6 pounds on average. The brain has developed fast and the lungs are almost fully developed. The head is usually positioned down into the pelvis, This is around the time when most moms give birth, but it can also happen before or after.

    Birth!

    Pregnancy can last between 38 and 42 weeks. Sometimes doctors may need to induce the labor.

    Week 0

    This is when the baby is conceived.
    Fertilization happens when sperm penetrates an egg. When this is done, the genetic makeup of the baby (including the sex) is determined.
