  • 1773: Tea Act

    1773: Tea Act
    Definition: reduce the massive amount of tea held by the financially troubled British East India Company and help the company survive.
    Colonist reaction: They boarded their ships dressed as Indians and dumped their loads overboard.
  • 1733: Molasses Act

    1733: Molasses Act
    Definition: Insistence of plantation owners in the British West Indies, Imposing a tax of six pence per gallon of molasses.
    Colonist reaction: Smuggling became popular because the tax was rarely paid which nullified the law.
  • Proclamation on 1763

    Proclamation on 1763
    Definition: No settlement West of the Appalachian Mountains.
    Colonist reaction: responded Negatively, and made them suspicious because there were other restrictions in place too.
  • 1764: Sugar Act

    1764: Sugar Act
    Definition: Raised taxes on foreign refined sugar imported by the colonies.

    Colonist reaction: They thought it was a violation of their rights as Englishmen to be taxed without their consent.
  • 1765: Stamp Act

    Definition: printed material has to be produced on stamped paper produced in London Carrying an embossed revenue stamp
    Colonist Reaction: violent protest, threatened stamp distributors and mobs prevented stamp papers from entering the country.

    1765: Quatering Act
    Definition: law for British soldiers to be provided with any needed accommodation or housing.
    Colonist reaction: they said it violated their right in the Bill Of Rights.
  • 1766: Repeal of Stamp Act

    Definition: took away the stamp act but brought up the Declatory Act.
    Colonist reaction: protesting stopped and colonists were happy about this and didn’t pay attention to the law it brought up.

    Definition: asserting that British government can tax the colonist whenever they wanted
    Colonist reaction: They thought they shouldn’t be taxed without representation
  • 1767: Townshed Act

    1767: Townshed Act
    Definition: designed to collect revenue from the colonist in America by putting taxes on imported goods
    Colonist reaction: contributed to the colonist anger and they responded with a boycott and didn’t import British goods
  • 1770: Boston Massacre

    1770: Boston Massacre
    Definition: A riot/ British troops fired on the mob and killed several of the colonist.
    Colonial reaction: They seen it as a vicious attack on unarmed citizens and were outraged.
  • 1774: Intolerable acts

    1774: Intolerable acts
    Definition: meant to punish the Massachusetts colonist for throwing a large tea shipment into the Boston Harbor.
    Colonist reaction: drove them to call the first continental congress and formed a collective resistance against British oppression.

    1774: First Continental Congress
    Definition: meeting of 12 delegates of the 13 colonies at Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia.
    Colonial reaction: they were happy because they sent people from their colonies to discuss getting the intolerable acts repelled.

    Definition: The first battle of the revolutionary war, moved from Boston toward Lexington and Concord to seize supplies
    Colonist reaction: they became upset, because they lost a lot of men during battle
  • 1775: Battle of Bunker Hill

    1775: Battle of Bunker Hill
    Definition: the first great battle when British Drove Americans from Breed’s hill to Bunker
    Colonist reaction: Inflicted many casualties against the enemy and the battle provided them with an important confidence boost.
  • 1775: Second Continental Congress

    1775: Second Continental Congress
    Definition: Removed the definition of “Militia”; The right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
    Olive branch Petition: Letters to King George III from members of the second continental congress, which represents the last attempt by the moderate party in North America to avoid a war of independence against Britain.
