  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    After the Soviet Union cut off all traffic and water to West Berlin in hopes of the Allies giving up West Berlin, American and British officials flew in supplies for 11 months. A plane landed into Berlin every three minutes in what is known as the Berlin Airlift.
  • Formation of Nato

    Formation of Nato
    NATO was a defensive alliance that formed due to fears of Soviet aggression. Twelve nations were a part of NATO, including the U.S. and Canada.
  • Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1956

    Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1956
    The Arab-Israeli War of 1956, or the Suez War, was the invasion of Egypt by Israel, Great Britain and France. It began after Nasser agreed to an arms deal with Czechoslovakia and Great Britain and the US worried it was shifting closer to ties with the Soviet Union.
  • Launch of Sputnik

    Launch of Sputnik
    The Soviets launch of Sputnik was the first unmanned satellite to be launched into space. The Soviets used an ICBM, or intercontinental ballistic missile. The US responded by pouring money into science education and launched a satellite in 1958.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    After the Soviets secretly built missile sites in Cuba and refuse to remove them, the US becomes threatened and blockades Cuba to prevent Soviets from installing more missiles. The Soviets end up agreeing to remove the missiles as long as the U.S. doesn't invade Cuba.
  • Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1967

    Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1967
    The Arab-Israeli War, or 6 day war, allowed Israel to defeat Egypt, Jordan, and occupied the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. The US sought a ceasefire in order to force the Soviet Union to intervene.
  • Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1973

    Arab-Israeli Conflict of 1973
    Egypt and Syria launch an attack on Israel on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar. The US sent in an airlift to help Israel. An Egyptian-Israeli cease-fire was sent in by the United Nations.
  • Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat

    Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat
    The Independent Organization for the Liberation of Egypt detonated to grenades aimed at Egypt's President Sadat. Although Sadat was a friend to the US, many people celebrated after hearing the news.
  • Tiananmen Square Protest

    Tiananmen Square Protest
    Students began protesting to overthrow the communist party and call for the resignations of Chinese Communist Party Leaders. On the day the students protested in Tiananmen Square forces fought back and thousands of the protestors were killed.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    East Germany closed its borders to due to the amount of people "vacationing" in Austria and further traveling to West Germany. This encourages protests and the new leader of East Germany attempts to restore stability by allowing people to leave.
