The Patricians and the Plebeians
This is the Greeks first two parties. Patricians were from noble families, while Plebians were wealthy merchants and middle class. -
Whigs and Tories
Whigs original name was Petitioners while Tories was Abhorrers. This was during the time people were planning to kill King Charles II and give the throne to his brother James, Duke of York. Whigs were for the murder while Tories were against the murder. -
Federalists
Alexander Hamilton and many others whos goal was strong central government began working together. This group of men called themselves the Federalists. This would be the first U.S. political party. Federalists agreed with England when dealing with Foreign affairs. -
George Washingtons opinion
When George Washington retired he said that America should stay away from different parties. -
Democratic-Republicans
Thomas Jefferson was the leader of this party, they were the Anti-Federalists or Democratic-Republicans. The men in this group were people who wanted a small government, one that left them alone and gave them freedom of their lives. Democratic-Repbulicans agreed with the Revolutionary of France. -
Democrats
Andrew Jackson was a Democratic-Republican from Tennesse who was elected as one of our presidents. Jackson decided to change the name to Democrat. Their biggest rival became the Republicans. -
Republicans
Many anti-jackson were Republicans also with, Whigs. When slavery came along it was what all political conversations were about. John C. Frémont was the first Republican presidential canidate to run. Later Abraham Lincoln would come and be a Republican dealing with slavery. -
Populists
Another name for this was the People's Party of the U.S. Support was from laborers and farmers. -
Progressive or Bull Moose
This parties leading candidate was Theodore Roosevelt. Republicans had a disagreement which led to some Republicans splintering out. Sadly in the election Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat beat Theodore. -
Libertarian
In this party they stressed individual rights. -
Reform
This party was formed somewhere around this time, but it grew a bunch during this time. Texas businessman H. Ross Perot was the former of this party.
