Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was elected president and his party gave the south and the west some great support and later changed the party's name to the democrats. -
The issue of slavery
The issue of slavery overshadowed the pollitical debate and leaving the parties to fall apart. And also people that wanted to apolish slavery left the whig party and later the whig party began to lose people to the know nothing party that was a violently party that opposed roman catholics and also left the whig party falling into pieces. -

Then later on a disagreeement happened in 1912 among the republican's and made a group called the progressive. -

In the 1930's the two parties weren't really mad at each other until the Great depression hit the country
