  • James Watt's steam engine

    James Watts steam engine was a major landmark in the development of modern industry. The machine worked by using steam to create power and was much more efficient than previous steam engines.
  • Telegraph

    The telegraph was created by two people, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. This invention allowed for long distance communication and was very helpful with the military.
  • Sewing Machine

    Several inventors had attempted to create a machine that would sew automatically. Elias Howe was the one who had a successful attempt at creating a working sewing machine. This made sewing super efficient and was really good for industry.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin was a novel published in 1852. The novel is about en enslaved man named Tom and his experiences with slavery.
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    This court case stated that enslaved African Americans didn't have the right to sue for their freedom. The decision was overturned by the 13th and 14th amendment and slavery was abolished.
  • Election of 1860

    The four candidates were Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. The nation was divided because of slavery. Some of Abraham Lincolns opinions eventually led to the Civil War.
  • The Formation of the Confederacy

    This event happened after Abraham Lincolns election in 1860. The Confederate States separated from the U.S they were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Their goal was to preserve slavery and states rights, which also led to the Civil War.
  • Abolishment of slavery

    Slavery was officially abolished on December 18, 1865. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, it declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
  • Typewriter

    Christopher Sholes created the first successful typewriter. People used them to communicate and it created a more popular and efficient way to write.
  • Interstate Commerce Act

    This act was made to regulate railroad industry and prevent unfairness. This was designed to protect citizens interest rates and continue to charge reasonably.
  • Wounded knee Massacre

    The Wounded knee Massacre was a conflict between the Unites States government and the Lakota Sioux Tribe. They were in disagreement with owning land and cultural disagreements.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    Plessy V. Ferguson was a supreme court case that allowed for segregation. This highly impacted the civil rights movement.
  • Susan B Anthony

    Susan B Anthony advocated for women's rights and fought for gender equality. She worked hard and eventually paved the way for the Nineteenth Amendment.
  • Spanish-American War

    The Spanish-American War was a conflict between the Unites States and Spain. Spain won and gained territory in the western Pacific.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to have their own choice of keeping slavery or not. This also contributed to the violence known as ¨bleeding Kansas.¨
