  • Compromise of 1790

    Agreement on the assumption of states' debts, located the capital in South.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    A tax protest that began in 1791 and lasted until 1794.
  • Bank of the United States

    The First National Bank of the United States established on February 25, 1791.
  • Bill of Rights

    Proposed by the Congress on September 25, 1789. Came into effect as Constitutional Amendments on December 15, 1791.
  • Jay's Treaty

    Negotiation between the U.S. and France that set the U.S.-French boundary.
  • Pinckney's Treaty

    Treaty with Spain. Opened the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans to U.S. trade.
  • Farewell Address

    A letter written by George Washington to the nation of the United States.
  • Election of 1800

    Between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, took place between November 4, 1796 to December 7, 1796. Adams won the presidency.
  • XYZ Affair

    1797-1798. Peace commissioners sent to France by President Adams were demanded bribery as a condition of negotiation. Outraged the U.S.
  • Quasi War

    An undeclared war between the U.S. and France during 1798-1800.
  • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

    1798-1799. Virginia and Kentucky legislatures drafted statements that the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.
  • Alien and Sedition Acts

    Four bills passed in June and July of 1798. Increased restrictions on foreigners and limited free speech. Very controversial.
  • Election of 1800

    Between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson during October 31, 1800 - December 3, 1800. Thomas Jefferson won.
  • Marbury v. Madison

    Argued in February 11, 1803 and decided in February 24, 1803. Through this court case, the Supreme Court established itself the exercise of Judicial Review.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    U.S. buys the whole Luisiana territory with 15 million dollars. Through this acquisition, the U.S. territory is nearly doubled.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    1804-1806. The expedition provided information about the unknown western territory.
