The Jay Treaty is ratified
Washington sends Chief Justice John Jay to Britain to discuss the seizure of American merchant vessels by British military ships. Britain agrees to evacuate posts on the Western frontier, but not much else. Washington was pleased because he kept his neutrality. -
Pinckney's Treaty is declared
Spain believes that the U.S is starting to form an alliance with Britain and consolidates its holdings in North America. Thomas Pinckery talks them out of it, gets the lower Mississippi River area, New Orleans as trade routs without paying duties by paying a deposit. -
