Early Life
Pocahontas' father was Powhatan, an indian leader from Tidewater, Virginia. It is believed that she was born sometime around 1595. As a youngster, she was called Matoaka and as a teen was called Amonute. These nicknames translated to 'Little Wanton", or a playful, merry little girl. -

Growing Up
As Pocahontas grew up she learned to build houses. She also learned to farm, cook, make baskets and make utensils. She learned to cut hair and make clothing from hides the men brought from hunting. -
Saving John Smith
John Smith arrives in Jamestown, VA with 100 settlers. In December 1607, Smith was captured while hunting by Opechancanough, a relative of Powhatan. Pocahontas met John Smith when she was 12 years old. Legend said that she laid her head on his to keep him from being killed. -
Coming of Age
Pocahontas had her coming of age ceremony. This was called "Huskanasquaw" and meant she was eligible to get married. This is when her name was officially changed to Pocahontas. -
Starving Time
When Smith returned to Jamestown there were only 38 out of 104 colonists left. Pocahontas became a regular visitor of John Smith. She provided food to the colonists during the harsh winter known as the "Starving Time". -
Pocahontas Married
Pocahontas married an indian Captain named Kocoume. She was only 15 years old. They lived for 3 years among the tribe until he was murdered. -
Captured
Pocahontas was captured by Captain Argyle. He planned to trade her for compromises from her father. During her captivity the colonists helped her become a Christian. -
Peace of Pocahontas
Pocahontas met and fell in love with John Rolfe. Her new name was "Lady Rebecca". They had a son who they named Thomas. This marriage produced 6 years of peace between the colonists and her fathers tribe, it was called the "Peace of Pocahontas. -
Visit to England
Pocahontas visited the country of England. She met King James and Queen Anne. She had her portrait painted iduring this trip. -
Pocahontas Death
Pocahntas became ill as she started back homefrom England. She died on the ship due to "English Disease". She was buried at the Church at Gravesend.
