Pocahontas is born in Virginia but the exact day and month are unknown. -
English Settler's
English setlers arrive in Virginia. There is not a specified date as to when Pocahontas becomes affiliated with them. Pocahontas spends much of her time watching them and made friends with some of the boys there. This is most likely what kept peace between her tribe and the settlers. -
Saving John Smith
Pocahontas allegedly saved John Smith's life when he was captured by the Powhatan Indians by putting her head above his so he could not be executed without her being killed as well. -
Captured by the English
Pocahontas' capture occurred in during the First Anglo-Powhatan War.Captain Samuel Argall pursued an alliance with the Patawomencks, a northern group of dubious loyalty to Powhatan. Argall and his indigenous allies tricked Pocahontas into boarding Argall's ship and held her for ransom, demanding the release of English prisoners and supplies held by Powhatan. -
John Rolfe
Pocahontas met John Rolfe during her year in captivity. In a long letter to the governor requesting permission to wed Pocahontas, he expressed both his love for her and his belief he would be saving her soul through the institution of Christian marriage. Pocahontas' feelings about Rolfe and the marriage are unknown. -
Marriage and Life Afterwards
Rolfe and Pocahontas married on April 5, 1614, and lived for two years on Rolfe's farm. On January 30, 1615, Pocahontas gave birth to Thomas Rolfe. According to Ralph Hamor, the marriage created a period of peace between the colonists and Powhatan.Pocahontas became of symbol of Indian religious conversion. -
Visiting England
In 1616 the Virginia Company invited Pocahontas to visit England, thinking that her visit would aid the company in securing investments from the British. Rolfe, Pocahontas, her brother-in-law Tomocomo, and several Indian girls sailed to England. There Pocahontas was a great success. She was treated as a princess, entertained by the Anglican bishop of London, and introduced to England's King James I and Queen Anne. -
Death
Pocahontas dies. She died from smallpox. She is buried in St. George's Church, Kent, England, UK.
