Sony partners with Nintendo
Sony enters into a partnership with Nintendo to begin work on creating the "PlayStation" game console. Nintendo was already a common household name in the gaming world and Sony sought out to be a part of that. Reference:

Sony and Nintendo ended their partnership.
The partnership between Sony and Nintendo ended due to conflicts over the CD and Technology rights of the prototype. Sony continued work on the prototype and rebranded as the "Sony Playstation". This event added Sony as a major competitor in the industry. Reference:

The first Sony PlayStation was released.
The first Sony Playstation was released in Japan on December 3rd 1994. This console was in competition against the current Sega and Nintendo consoles of the time. It was many young Americans first interaction with the Japan based Sony brand. Reference:

Release of the PlayStation 2
In March of 2000 Sony released the PlayStation 2 game console. This model was compatible to play both PS1 and PS2 games. The worldwide reach of this console was nothing short of a phenomenon. More than 155 million consoles of this model were sold around the world. Reference:

Sony releases PlayStation 3
This console is also backwards compatible with PS1 & PS2 games. Thanks to the PS3, Blu Ray won the disk standard war at the time against HD-DVD. Although it had a rough launch due to Some Americans considering it overpriced, it was many people's first experience with online gaming in the PlayStation ecosphere. Reference:

Release of the PlayStation 4
Sony released the PlayStation 4 model in 2013. This new console boasted higher processing power and 4K resolution. This powerhouse revolutionized online gaming with improved graphics. With this console online gaming purchases skyrocketed. Reference:

Release of the PlayStation 5
In 2020, Sony released the PlayStation 5. The PS5 was released in two models- the standard model with a disk drive, and the digital edition with no disk drive. The lesser price of the diskless model further drove the American economy to digital only gaming. Reference:
