The Pittsburgh Pirates started out as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, but earned their name as the Pittsburgh Pirates after they signed Louis Bierbauer in 1891. The A's and their American Association brethren immediately accused the Pittsburgh Alleghenys of "pirating" Bierbauer away from them and the nick name Pirates stuck.
