  • The name "Pirates"

    The name "Pirates"
    The Pittsburgh Pirates started out as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, but earned their name as the Pittsburgh Pirates after they signed Louis Bierbauer in 1891. The A's and their American Association brethren immediately accused the Pittsburgh Alleghenys of "pirating" Bierbauer away from them and the nick name Pirates stuck.

    Roberto Clemente dies in a plane crash
    On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente boarded a small plane with supplies headed to Puerto Rico after a devastating earthquake. His plane crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico and his body was never recovered.
