    Winter in the Big Woods of Wisconsin
    Laura, Mary, Carrie, Ma and Pa lived in a log cabin. In the Winter, it was too cold to go outside and play in the woods. Laura and Mary played inside with their dolls in the attic.
  • Spring in the Big Woods of Wisconsin

    Mary and Laura played outside with their dolls. They made houses under the Oak trees and provided tea parties for their dolls. Laura and Mary had to figure out a way to be nice and play together all of the time because there were no other kids around.

    Pa Takes the Family to Town for the First Time Ever
    Mary, Laura and Carrie had never left the Big Woods before today and they were very excited. Ma helped them pick out their most beautiful dresses. Mary's was china blue and Laura's was red. Pa drove the covered wagon to the town called Pepin. It was the first time they had ever seen houses and a store. The watched their Pa trade fur for what they needed from the store.
  • Different Hair Colors Are the Same

    Mary has blond hair with curls and Laura has plain brown hair. They were doing chores together after Aunt Lottie visited. Mary started bragging about her hair being more beautiful than Laura's hair. Laura hit Mary because she felt bad about her own hair. When Pa talked to them about it, Laura realized that her hair wasn't so bad because Pa has the same color as her. She learned that it doesn't matter what others think or say about her.
  • Moving to the Prairie

    Moving to the Prairie
    People from town were moving to the Big Woods. The animals were in danger because the people cut trees down to build houses and stores. Pa wanted to live where the animals were safe so they moved to the Prairie in Kansas.
  • The Indian Camp

    Pa took Mary and Laura to see an Indian Camp near their house. They found sticks, campfire ashes, moccasin footprints and dog prints. They got to see how the Indians lived. Laura found beads on the ground. Pa let the girls collect the beads to make a necklace for Carrie.
  • A Fire Happens

    A Fire Happens
    Pa was outside hunting for food. Ma, Carrie, Laura and Mary were inside singing by the fire. Laura and Ma heard a sound in the chimney. Ma realized the chimney was on fire. Laura took care of her sisters while Ma went outside to put out the fire. The family was scared. No one got hurt because Laura saved the girls by moving them away from the fire.
  • Moving Again

    Moving Again
    The government kicked the family off of their land because it belonged to the Indians. Pa moved them to Plum Creek into a wonderful house with dirt walls and a grass roof. The best part was it could never catch on fire.
  • A Button Necklace for Carrie

    Laura and Mary got to use beautiful old buttons from Ma's collections and Ma's Mom's collection. They made a necklace for little Carrie with the buttons and called it a Button String.
  • Christmas Day

    Mary and Laura got a box of candy in their stockings. Carrie loved her Button necklace. Pa surprised the family with two horses. The horses were important to the family so that they could get places.
