Pierre Duhems' Birth
Pierre Maurice Marie Duhem was the oldest of four children. He was born to a commercial traveler Pierre-Joseph Duhem and Marie-Alexandrine Fabre in Paris, France. From a young age it was obvious that Pierre was a gifted child. Beginning at the age of seven he was given private lessons on grammar, arithmetic, Latin, and catechism. -
1872
In the Fall of 1872 a diphtheria epidemic killed Pierre’s younger sister Antoinette and his baby brother Jean leaving the Duhems' family with only two children. Pierre however, decided to further his education at a Catholic school. He attended the Collège Stanislas in Paris at the age of 11! He attended college for 10 years. -
1882
Duhem enrolled in an institution for higher education, the Ecole Normale Supérieure. -
1884
Duhem was still attending Ecole Normale Superieure and was studying pure science. That same year he published his first paper. His paper was on electrochemical cells. Along with that he also submitted his doctoral thesis on thermodynamic potentials in physics and chemistry. -
1894
Pierre was teaching at Lille and Rennes as a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Bordeaux. At this time he was also known for work in thermodynamics and hydrodynamics. Such as Études sur Léonard de Vinci (1906–13; “Studies on Leonardo da Vinci”) and La Théorie physique, son objet et sa structure (1906; “Physical Theory, Its Aim and Structure”).

1913
Pierre began his publication of Le Système du monde; Histoire des doctrines cosmologiques, de Platon à Copernic (1913–17; “The World System; History of Cosmological Doctrines from Plato to Copernicus”), this eventually lead to there being 10 volumes; however only five of them where completed by the time of his death. -
