    Similarly, the language of landscape allows Jane Austen's characters to measure the physical and emotional distances that separate them and thereby to gain a sense of personal and private space.
    Because it foregrounds aesthetic ideology in modern conceptions of individuality, nature and property, the picturesque provides a crucial pre-text for Romanticism—whose cultural legacy includes such modern institutions as environmentalism, scenic tourism, and the escape to suburban life.
