Mozi (墨翟), a Chinese philosopher was the first to come up with the idea of a Camera Obscura that we know of. he noticed that an imaged taken from it would cause the picture to be upside down and left to right because of how light moves. -

Philosophers are still pondering about this idea of recreating an image with light. In 900AD Al Kindi proved the behaviors of light with a pinhole that other philosophers such as Aristotle and Anthemius discovered.Everyone was on the right track but never thought to use a screen on one side of the hole to project it to a surface. -

alhazen and the pinhole camera
Alhazen was the first to make a fully functioning pinhole camera, and came up with the name of Camera Obscura. He was the man who wrote The Book of Optics, and the treatise of optics.
At about the same time of Alhazens inventions, Chinese scientists were making the same ideas come true, using this new tool to solve geographical problems from centuries ago. -

Photographers want more and more quality and often forget the simplicity and advancement that we've made throughout the years.
