The Birth of Bumstead Phoenix College's Mascot
In the 1920s, Phoenix Junior College would borrow a plaster bear from the local ice cream parlor for its games and to be used for other events. In 1931, the college received a concrete bear statue from the Standard Oil Company in downtown Phoenix. The statue was given to the college by a student. In 1935, another student coined the bear's name as Bumstead. Link text -

Dr. Larry Johnson, Jr. became the sixth president of Phoenix College. Prior to being hired at Phoenix College, Dr. Johnson served as the Campus Provost and Chief Academic Officer at St. Louis Community College Public School District. Link text -
