British philosopher John Dupré was born. -
Education
John went to school at the University of Oxford, and received a Ph.D from Cambridge University. Mr. Dupré is knowledgeable in the general philosophy of science, and philosophy of social science, but his greatest area of work lies in the philosophy of biology. -
Work
Becomes the director of ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society (now known as Egenis, the Centre for the Study of Life Sciences). His focus there was concerning the interpretation and implications of genetics and genomics. This image, as described by him, shows the relationship between microbes and multi-cellular organisms and displays the phenomenon of lateral gene transfer. He disagrees with the perception of a "tree of life" and views the relationship to resemble more of an interconnected web. -

A Process Ontology for Contemporary Biology
At Egenis, Dupré leads a major project which intends to alter highly topical issues in the philosophy of biology.The project explores the perspective of a process to provide a critique of the widely discussed recent versions of mechanism and will apply those ideas to areas of contemporary biology such as: systems biology, synthetic biology, and microbiology.
