    The Indigenous People

    Early Indigenous People- The first inhabitants were believed to arrive in the Philippine islands around 250,000 years ago, these people were considered to be cavemen. They lived by hunting and fishing, and had no knowledge of agriculture. They eventually left to unknown destinations.

    Second wave- These men were called the Aetas they inhabited the island about 30,000 years ago. The Aetas have dark skin, curly hair, thick lips and flat nose. They also are said to have no religious believes. These inhabitants where more knowledgeable in hunting and food gathering tactics. They used spears and small flint stone weapons.

    The Third Wave- The last wave of people to arrive on the Philippines were the Malays and then the Indonesians. They arrived by boat, and were much more advanced than the Aetas. They had steel, which allowed them to have tools and sturdier structures. They also farmed, mined and wore clothes.

    Beginning of Colonization

    During the early colonization a Portuguese explorer (Ferdinand Magellan 1521), discovered an islands. He claimed the land for Spain, and had a friendly relationship with the inhabitants. While he was there he converted some of the natives to Roman Catholicism. He was later killed during a dispute with the chief of the indigenous tribe.

    Colonization

    Permanent Spanish settlement began in 1565 when an expedition led by a conquistador who arrived from Mexico. Six years prior to defeating the Muslim ruler, they established a capital at Manila. This was a great location because it had many resources for people such as a harbor, many people lived there and close distance to a food sourcs. Manila also became home for a Spanish Govt. It was an easy task for the Spanish people to inhabit the islands because the natives rarely fought back.

    In 1898 the Spanish-American War began, it was a war between the U.S and Spain. Spain ceded the Philippines to the U.S. through the Treaty Of Paris. A few days before the Treaty was passed a fight broke out and that's when the Filipino-American War began.

    The Filipino-American War began in 1899-1902. It was a war between the American forces and Filipino nationalist who were led by Emilio Aguinaldo. Emilio Aguinaldo wanted independence rather than be ruled over by another country.
