It is known that Philip II was very close t his mother as a child until she died of a miscarriage. Through the death of his mother, Philip was able to understand more but it also shaped him onto what he became.

Through the Marriage of Mary of England, Philip Acquires new land; Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, making Philip II more stronger. With more land, Philip would become stronger with more people to rule over.

On October 25, 1555, Philip gets to have the Netherlands, and on January 16, 1556, Philip also gets the kingdoms of Spain and its overseas empire from his father; Charles V. By this acquisition, Philip gets to experience on how to run the land and people, this is his first step into being a leader and his reign.

From his return from the Netherlands, Philip never left from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). By doing so, he never saw his subjects outside of Castile, which eventually turned against his ministers and him.

Probably one of his biggest accomplishments towards protecting Catholicism. Although he failed to destroy the protestants in England, he was able to frighten the Turks. This was his only achievement in war and he saw this as a very honorable contribution to the Catholic Faith.

On Philip's fourth marriage to his niece, he finally gets an heir. Because of this, Philip does not need to keep marrying to get an heir. Philip now did not need to worry about getting an heir and can pass on his reign.

El Escorial affected Spain as a whole since it represented Spain's wealth to other empires. El Escorial helped show Spain's neighbors Spain's power and wealth, like many other places this showed their military power. "The Escorial also reflected Philip's Faith" (Beck 591).
