    Battle of Long Island (Brooklyn Heights)
    Location: Long Island, New York
    Leaders: British: Lord Charles Cornwallis, Sir Henry Clinton, Sir William Howe. American: George Washington, Israel Putnam, William Alexander
    Why: Britian wanted to obtain a harbor so they could recieve supplies and help the powerful navy. New york is a harbor.
    What happened: Britain won, kept New York, and were able to recieve Hessians and supplies. More war broke out.

    The Landing at Kip's Bay
    Location: Kip's Bay, Manhattan, New York
    Leaders: British: Sir Henry Clinton and Richard Howe. American: George Washington
    Why: The British wanted to obtain New York, because it was a harbor.
    What Happened:The British succesfully landed, and the British had now claimed even more of New York.

    The Battle of White Plains
    Location: White Plains, New York
    Leaders: British: William Howe. American: George Washington.
    Why: The British wanted to isolate the New England colonies, and they believed that if they owned New York, they would be able to isolate the colonies easier.
    What happened: British victory. More war broke out in the middle states.

  • The Battle of Fort Washingotn

    The Battle of Fort Washingotn
    Location: Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York
    Leaders: British: Sir William Howe, Wilhelm von Knyphausen. American: George Washington, Robert Magaw
    Why: In an attempt to fully obtain all of New York, the British attacked the last American stronghold, Fort Washington.
    What happened: the British won, and had successfully completed their New York Campaign. They were more able to isolate New England now.

  • The Battle of Trenton

    The Battle of Trenton
    Location: Trenton, New Jersey
    Leaders: British: Johann Rall. American: George Washington
    Why: The Americans needed supplies and wanted New Jersey. Also, Americans wanted to surprise the Hessians. The army needed spirit most were ready to quit the army.
    What happened: America won. The victory proved that there was a good American general and the army began to attract recruits

    The Battle of Princeton
    Location: Princeton, New Jersey
    Leaders: British: Captain William DeLaPlace, Charles Mawhood. American: George Washington
    Why: Cornwallis was angry that they had lost in Trenton, so he set out to win. He waited for Washington to arrive where he had arrived with his troops in Trenton on the evening of January 2 and was ready, but Washinton snuck out and attacked them!
    What happened: the Americans won, restoring New Jersey patriotism. NJ loyalists were exhiled.

    Location: Oriskany, NY
    Leaders: British: Chief Joseph Brant, John Butler, Sir John Johnson. American: Nicholas Herkimer
    Why: British troops were marching to meet up with others in Albany, when they passed Fort Stanwix (also called Fort Schuyler) and demanded the fort's surrender
    What happened: This was a tie, for both lost numerous men. The American victory was a strategic victory, and the British win was a tactical victory. They were unable and left

    Leaders: British: Friedrich Baum. American: John Stark
    Why: The British needed more supplies
    What happened: The Americans Won! This battle fatigued Burgoyne, and led to his eventual defeat during the period of the Battles of Saratoga

    The Battle of Brandywine
    Location: Near Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania
    Leaders: Britain: Sir William Howe. American: George Washington
    Why: The British wanted to attack Washington and his army.
    What happened: The British won, making the Americans forfeit their cannons to the British, and most of their artillery had fallen during the battle.

    The Battle of Saratoga (Freeman's Farm)
    Location: Saratoga County, New York
    Leaders: British: General John Burgoyne. Americans: General Horatio Gates, Benedict Arnold, and Daniel Morgan
    Why: the British needed supplies.
    What Happened: The British won, but suffered about 600 casualties

  • The Battle of Germantown

    The Battle of Germantown
    Location: Germantown, Pennsylvania
    Leaders: British: Lord Charles Cornwallis, Sir William Howe, Wilhelm von Knyphausen. American: George Washington, Nathanael Greene
    Why: William Howe camped out with his troops near Germantown, and Washington decided to pull a sneak attack!
    What happened: Britain won. Though the Americans lost, they proved that they were turning out to be a better army. Americans were on their way to becoming a well-trained army!

    The Battle of Saratoga (Bemis Heights)
    Location: Saratoga County, New York
    Leaders: British: John Burgoyne. American: Horatio Gates, Benedict Arnold, and Benjamin Lincoln
    Why:The British still needed supplies
    What happened: America won, due to Burgoyne's surrender. Britain ended up needing help from other European countries. Also, Britain starts to see America as a threat. The Americans may win!

    Location: Monmouth, New Jersey
    Leaders: British: Sir Henry Clinton. American: George Washington
    Why: Having evacuated Philadelphia, the British under Sir Henry Clinton were marching through New Jersey to Sandy Hook. They encountered Washington, and the battle began!
    What happened: Both sides claimed to win, but the British story is more credible, because Clinton completed the battle while Washington retreated
