  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln won the election by Electoral College vote even though he got less than 40% of the popular vote. He wanted to abolish slavery. He used telegraphs during the war to tell them what to do.
  • Confederate States Form

    Confederate States Form
    11 states that seceded from the U.S. that followed the election of Abraham Lincoln. They wanted to split the country so that some of the land was free and some were not. The South had slaves and the North did not.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    This marked the official beginning of the Civil War that lasted for 4 years. Forces from the Confederate States of America attacked the U.S. military. At least 52 confederate soldiers were killed and more than 260 were injured.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    First Battle of Bull Run
    Confederate troops were too disorganized to press their advantage. Around 460 people were killed in this battle. This battle showed that the war was real and that the fate of our country would not be decided after just one fight. This caused the North and South to face the reality of a long bloody war.
  • Jefferson Davis inaugurated as President of Confederate States of America

    Jefferson Davis inaugurated as President of Confederate States of America
    He was the first and only president of the Confederate states after the South decided to suceded. He was sworn in on November 6th 1861and served a 6-year term. He presided over the South´s creation of its armed forces and weapons. He ended up dying in New Orleans in 1889.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    1754 Unions were killed and many more wounded. The Confederates withdrew from this battle. The Union won the battle.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    The Union won this battle and it is known as the bloodiest day of the war. This battle was one of the key turning points in the Civil War. By using advanced technology, new tactics, and bad decision-making, it caused this to be the the bloodied day.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Decree freeing all enslaved people in states still in rebellion after January 1, 1863. They did not want the border to be free so they did this instead of all enslaved people. They knew slavery was wrong and wanted to stop it .
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    Union won this battle. They gained control of the Mississippi River. This was the battle that weakened the confederacy and isolated the southern states. The South could not get anything in our out.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Union won the battle. Union had fought off an invasion-confederacy would be on the defensive for the rest of the war. More than 20000 people died on each side.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    Commemorate a new national cemetery. Lincoln highlighted the sacrifice of all the Union soldiers. He was trying to make us more united.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    Total war: physical destruction of everything in the union´s path. William Sherman leads the Union. It was justified because the North won the war. Wanted to demoralize the civilian population of Georgia.
  • Appomattox Court House

    Appomattox Court House
    Trapped by the federal; Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to the Union general. This marks the beginning of the end of the war. 260 Union soldiers died and 440 confederate soldiers died.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
    He went to the theater and was shot in the back of the head. His assassination was revenge from the Confederate states.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    Says that there will not be any more slavery. People knew slavery was wrong so when the 13th Amendment was passed, they knew they were doing the right thing and moving in the right direction.
