Shah comes into power : Mohamed reza pahlavi was the last shah. He was coronated in 1967, he was 26. Due to his status as the last Shah of Iran, he is often known as simply the Shah. -
Beginning of the economic crisis
In 1970, the economy state was growing, but not equally. The proper agriculture of the country wasn’t developing, but the revenues of oil companies were giant. The country was depending on the oil revenues. -
Manifestations
Beginning of the manifestations against the Shah.The first protests were though to be conspiracies against the shah and many people killed. Government efforts to stop protests with violence fueled further protest. They began to grow so the government imposed martial law, killing hundreds. -
Burning of Cinema Rex
The cinema rex, was set ablaze on august 19 of 1978, killing at least 420 civilians. Four men covered it with fuel before the accident, it was one of the largest terrorist attacks in history of Iran. -

Marji's parents don't let her demonstrate against the Shah, so she decides to go by her own. -
Black Friday
The Black Friday massacre, are shootings that happened in the Jaleh square in Tehran, Iran. Thousands gathered to protest even though the government declared martial law the day before. The military opened fire and many died. -
Arrestment/death of Uncle Anoosh
Uncle Anoosh gets captured by the government and they send him to jail.He gets killed in jail. -
Uncle Anoosh arrive’s
Uncle Anoosh arrives and stays for a few days. Marji idolises him because he is a hero in her eyes. He tells her about his ex-wife, stories, adventures that he has gone through to get there. -
Marji stops wanting to be a prophet
After seeing her uncle Anoosh in prison Marji loses her faith in god and stops wanting to be a prophet. -
The mother is attacked by 2 fundamentalist men
Marji's mother gets verbally attacked by 2 fundamentalist men (citizens) because she wasn't wearing the veil. -

The Shah is exiled
Mohammad Reza, the shah, was exiled in 1979. He fled to USA soon after the black Friday massacre. The explanations of his overthrow include his status as a dictator, and that the people accused him of taking down the culture of Iran for an American one. -
Iran transformation into a Islamic Republic
Iran's patriotic monarchy was replaced by a republic when the shah was overthrown. He was replaced by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The republic was based on the principle of rule by Islamic jurists. -
Iraq and Iran start a war
The war started because Iraq invaded Iran. Iraq wanted to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state. The war also followed a long history of border disputes. -
End of the Iran and Iraq war
After eight years of war and economic devastation, the tension led the United Nations to step in. It is estimated that 500,000 Iraqi and Iranian soldiers died, in addition to a smaller number of civilians.
