When gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California,some 300,000 gold-seekers called, "forty-niners", to California.The name of forty-niners is due to the year 1849. Them knowing about the gold also helped California become a state. -
the compromise of 1850
The compromise was introduced by Henry Clay in result of having California made into a free state. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished.
