People and events

  • My Uncle

Although he seems a little "unusual" at times, he is always very nice to me and gives me practical tips rather than in theory. He is very good at doing practical things, and is supportive of whatever I do. I want to have his qualities of doing what he thinks is right instead of being affected by other people's opinions.
  • Mom and Dad

They've been with me since I was born! Also, they're very supportive about my choices and give me a lot of freedom, which allowed me to be creative in my decision making.
  • My Brother

Although he used to bully me often when we were younger, now he just leaves me alone. However, the mentor project let me see the leadership qualities in him, and his active participation in church. I want to become like him, someone who has leadership in their belief.
  • Barber's Candy

When I was 3 years old, my parents brought me to a barber, but I refused to cut my hair, and started crying. To stop me from crying, the barber offered me a piece of candy, which I gladly took. Afterwards, he thought I was ready for the haircut, but instead, I continued crying while eating the candy. Eventually, my parents brought me out, and it was embarrassing. From that, I learned to not make a big racket out of small things.
  • Injection

It was first grade, and we had to take injections. I knew I had to tell the nurse that I was left handed, and to take the injection on my right arm. However, I didn't do that, and later on the week I struggled to write, and I learned to be clear with my intentions all the time and to do simple things right.
  • Mr. Kadow - 4th grade teacher

This was my first year at ICS, I didn't like him as my teacher. Unlike the other classes, he encouraged us to push further and to test our limits, and since I was weak at English then, I struggled a lot. Looking back, I realized he gave me a jumpstart to speaking English, or else I would've been quite behind everyone else, and his activities were engaging, but served the purpose of learning.
  • First time sticker selling

I went out to sell stickers for charity once, and learned the difficulties of finding money, since it took a long time to find anyone to come to me. Also, it was for the church's ministry, and so not only did I learn from my own experience, but raised money too.
  • Rafael Cheung

This was one of my friends back in elementary. We folded paper airplanes during recess and also played hoopball - a hockey-like game, except you use a hoop instead of a hockey stick. He was very friendly, and taught me how to interact with the other students at ics, and was very accepting.
  • 4th Grade Camp

This was my first camp in an English environment, and everything that happened during camp was different from my expectations. Instead of the worship songs played on speakers at my old school, people actually came up to sing. It was a step closer to God and I even got to talk to the speaker afterwards.
  • Fishing on a Boat

One time, I followed my uncle to fish on a boat, which was my first time experiencing this. This was one of my most refreshing experiences. After a difficult encounter with my first fish and lost it, my uncle told me that to retrieve anything, we had to work hard on it, and I was able to catch the fish with his help on my second try.
  • Visit to Elderly Home

ICS organized a visit to an elderly home, and after I went there, I started appreciating what I had that I took for granted. For example, there were always friends around me that I could hang around and talk to, and I'm usually free to go out (except during coronavirus), while they didn't have that option.
  • Middle School

First time entering middle school was completely different from before. Instead of teachers coming to us, now we have to walk to our individual classes. This was a large jump in my time management and also individuality.
  • Mr Bradford

He was my previous roots group teacher before he left and Mr Sheridan replaced him. He would find us videos to watch and then reflect over it, and it was a quick and effective way of learning. Also, he was the friendliest PE teacher I've had, and I want to reflect his kindness to others as well.
  • Nicholas Lo

Nicholas is a great example to me because he shows his active participation in sports and is willing to try out difficult new things. He is not awkward socially. I strive to have his positive qualities in my life as well, and to be more naturally social.
  • Technoblade

Technoblade. How could we forget him? He is an inspiration to me because he shows confidence in everything he is doing, and his dream to start youtube was to achieve 10 million subscribers. He never backed away from his dream, and now he's well on his way to achieving it. I want to see his confidence in myself and to set a difficult goal but strive to achieve it.
  • Church Pastor

This was back in my old church, where it was a cantonese speaking community. I was a lot younger than the other people who were in my group, and I struggled to interact socially with others. The pastor not only encouraged me to speak up, but also taught me how to play clash royale - something unexpected. This was important to me learning to be courageous and speak to others, since they may be very kind.
  • Joining Roots Group

I joined a roots group in eighth grade. I wasn't sure what to expect, and to my pleasant surprise, everyone in the roots group was very friendly, and we hang around after doing devotions and play card games. This allowed me to learn that exposure to a friendly community is a necessity for anyone who's trying to join a new group.
  • Hike, grade 10

We were so lost during the hike and were still high up on the mountain by the time the hike was supposed to end, and somehow we found a flag, which led us down the mountain. This taught me not to go blindly on unrecognized trails and to listen to my dad's reminder, since he told me the hike was going to be dangerous, but I chose to go anyway.
  • Mentor Project

The mentor project was a big step for me because not only did I learn more about God from that, but it was a way for me and my brother to interact more frequently, since our relationship wasn't too close.
  • Mr Sheridan

Mr Sheridan is my roots group teacher, and he always manages to find new devotional topics for us. He is a great example in how to do my own devotions, and I've followed his plans for my private devotions.
