Black Ships to Japan
"Black ships" as japanese called them, went to the bay of Edu, know known as Tokyo, lead by US Commoder Matthew Perry. They were sent to open trade with other nations. Threatened by the big warships, Japan signed a trade treaty with the U.S. Five years later, Japan signed trade treaties with Great Britain, Russia, France and Holland. It was also said that it wasnt Americas right to "open" a nation that wanted to be left alone. -
Japans Strong Independent Nation
In 1860, a 15-year-old emperor took the throne. The name he choose was "Meiji" which means enlightened reign. In the 45 years of Mutsuhito's reign, Japan reached the goal of a rich country and strong military. By the end of the 19th century they had a new political system with a parliament and constitution, modern army and navy, and growing businesses. -
America becomes a Pacific Power
The U.S. and Spain fought a brief war. The reason behind that Americans supported the rebellions on the Caribbean island of Cuba who want independence from Spain. The U.S. took over Spain's Pacific Possessions including the Philippines. At the same time Britain, Germany, France, and Japan were taking control of China's port cities. The U.S. then noticed they could lose its profitable trades with China so the "open door policy" was created. The Hawaiian islands were also taken illegally. -
The Great Depression
The whole world went into a economic depression because of the failure of important European banks plunging. It hit Japan hardest. Since they had to natural resources, they had to import oil, steel, iron and other commodities in order to keep its industry and military forces alive.As Japans economy grow worse so did they become more aggressive.They decided to increase the amount of territories under Japans force. -
China in Flames
China and Japan goes into war because of how much suffering China had to adore. In December, Japanese troops captured the City of Nanjing and a month later, massacred as many as 300,000 Chinese. The world then started having hate and anger for Japan and their actions. The U.S. had a special connection with China and acted like their protector, but didn't wanna get involved. Two years later, WWII was started when Germany and Russia attacked Poland . -
The Tripartite Pact
In 1940 the way Japan replied to Americas actions were by joining Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in the Tripartite Pact.Three of the countries supported each other in all ways.President replied back to this by taking away Japans property and money in the US.Asian also cut off oil to Japan as well.Without oil and metal, Japan couldnt participate in WWll so they acted by coming up with a plan to first defeat US pacific missile range in Honolulu, Hawaii. -
War Warning
Japan is now planning surprise attacks from Hawaii to Hong Kong under the influence of Prime Minister Hideki Tojo.They would have to center four aircraft carriers at a remote north Japanese island then fly thousands of mile of ocean to reach Hawaii.Hints were noticed that Japan was gonna strike somewhere, but no one thought theyd be brave enougfh to strike Hawaii.On November 26, the first ships of the Japanese ships left and War Warning was sent out to Hawaii,Phillipines,Panama Canal and US. -
Pearl Harbor
On December 6th everything is calm.Sailors and others working with the military are being with their families and friends or at a bar having fun.Planes are lined up neatly and vulnerable.In the dark sea close to Hawaii, Japanese ships and aircraft are ready to strike and Hawaii has no clue of it. -
Day of Infamy
December 6, 1941,Japanese government started sending messages to the US diplomats in Washington.The last message didn't get sent till the next day.Japan was ending all negotiations with the US.They did NOT know that the messages were being decoded and sent to President Roosevelt and to the high commanders of the US Army and Navy.They sent word to Hawaii of a strike that might happened but they only got the message at 8:00am when missiles already started falling. -
The Next Day
The next day, none of US military of Hawaii are on any alert. But when the US navy are on their normal patrol, they see a periscope of a submarine.They head on to the submarine and alert base of a maybe attack but as they get closer the sub dissappears. -
The Attack
It is a peaceful morning in Hawaii, as everyone is sleeping Japanese sends out 185 aircraft bombers to strike Pearl Harbor.All of a sudden, windows start to rattle Nd booms are heard.Little did they know that was the last peace on Hawaii they'd get for the next 3 years and 8 months.Americas fleet is in ruins and their battle ship was blown up by three torpedoes.A ship sank was hit and sank which also killed almost all the crew men and women who were sleeping in the ship.
