Dwight D Eisenhower was born to David and Ida Eisenhower. He is the third of seven brothers to be born. -

World War II
Eisenhower was put in charge of the European and African Theatre. Through two operations, he would use British and American forces to drive Germany from Africa and into Italy. From there, he would invade the Sicily and sweept through Italy. After this, he would invade Fortress Europe through the English Channel in one of the most daring amphibious attacks in history. This will be covered in another event. After he breached Europe, the Allies would end the war in Berlin. It was over. -

Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President, beating out his former boss President Truman. During his term as president, he woud create NASA and DARPA, at the time ARPA -
The Founding of ARPA
The Advanced Research Projects Agency was founded by Dwight to expand on the frontiers of technology and science. -
Explorer 1 Studies the Earth. Sun, and Space
Explorer 1 was launched two months after Sputnik, the Russian satellite. It's goal was to study and record data about Earth, the Sun, and space in general. After four months, the batteries would be exhausted and transmissions from the spacecraft would cease to come in. -
The Founding of NASA Replaces NACA
The National Aeronautics and Space Agency was founded by Eisenhower on the hopes of exploring the vast frontier of space in a peaceful way. NASA replaced the previous agency of the same function called NACA, National Advisory Comittee for Aeronautics. -
The Death of a Giant
Dwight would die of ccongestive heart failure on this day. He would be buried alongside his son Doud in Abilene, Kansas. His wife Mamie would join them in 1979. Despite being out of office, many still looked up to and respected the former general and president. Even Richard Nixon spoke praise about Eisenhower. -
The Creation of ARPANET
The precursor to the modern day Internet, ARPANET was the first networking system that used packet switching, commonly used by websites today, to transfer information. The early versions of routers and modems were also first built alongside ARPANET. -
Apollo 11 Touches the Moon
The crew of Apollo 11, a NASA funded mission, would be the first to set foot on the surface of Earth's moon. -
The Internet is Created
ARPANET and its replacement NSFNET would be interlinked to create the modern Internet as it is a global TCP/IP network. This could not have been achieved with ARPANET or its replacement NSFNET, which are both from DARPA.
