    The federal government encouraged higher education by granting each state, starting with Ohio, their most prized commodity, land. On this land universities were formed that are still around today. The universities expanded beyond agriculture and mechanical arts to continue to grow and meet the needs to today's growing and ever-changing work-force.

    Henry Barnard organized the first place teachers formally began to develop their own pedagogy. He was the first one to recognize and take strategic action in teaching becoming it's own true profession that required the development of skills and techniques. Now we have doctorates in teaching that spend years preparing to teach others how to teach.

    As an increasingly growing need for standards to be set to graduate from high school and attend college became apparent, the Committee of Ten was appointed by the National Education Association to develop a high school curriculum. The classes were mandatory for all students and are still being taught in today's high schools include: English literature, algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, history, and geography.

    Ruby Bridges was the first elementary student that got national attention for integrating into a white school in New Orleans. This was one of the first signs American was trying to correct some of its past mistakes and schools should be a place to bring everyone together. Part of a future teacher's curriculum is taking multi cultural education so instructors can learn how to teach to each individual student no matter their race or ethnicity.
