  • Social Monitoring (Part A)

    The Chinese government was monitoring what their citizens were saying to ensure it was not anything involving negative speech of the government, human rights violations, and anything the government deems unacceptable by their standards. By using “internet police” the government was able to trace and delete anything deemed inappropriate
  • Political Incarceration

    Due to North Korea being a dictatorship attempting to remove the leader is practically impossible, leading to arrests of other political figures out of fear of losing political power. Using media and surveillance to find said political figures
  • Facial Recognition

    Facial recognition is used worldwide for “Security and Justice Reasons” However it leads to the data either being stolen or sold to third parties by world governments.
  • Forced Labor

    In North Korea forced labor is used in prison camps to fill in the gaps of employment when someone is arrested and to teach the person “how bad the crime was” that they committed was. Media is used to find people who did or said something that the government deems illegal.
  • Censorship (End of Part A)

    Censorship is used around the world to stop citizens of a country from seeing or saying anything the government doesn’t want them saying or seeing.
  • War Crimes Involving Citizens

    During war in the country of Sri Lanka civilians were tortured and killed during conflict. Media helped expose the war crimes and the people of Sri Lanka want justice
  • Forced Labor (Part B)

    Forced labor is common in North Korean prison camps because it is an effective way to punish people. Forced Labor was exposed through journalism/ media and satellite imagery.
  • War Crimes Involving citizens

    Technology such as satellites and 3D modelling to expose Russia bombing civilians and church’s. Media helped push the stories.
  • Online Targeting Of LGBT Individuals

    In the Middle East and North Africa. A 27 year old gay man was arrested and forced to sign passers saying he was practicing debauchery after an undercover cop met with him using a gay dating/hookup app called grinder. they searched all of his belongings. The individual was able to spread the word to other LGBT people and to media outlets.
  • Bangladesh Shipping Companies profiting off cheap labor (End of Part B)

    Bangladesh shipping companies are profiting off cheap labor abuse. Companies are sending end of life ships to waters in Bangladesh to sink into the ocean instead of properly scrapping them. Also dumping toxic waste into waters intentionally. Companies are exploiting the labor laws to underpay workers to complete dangerous tasks.
