The Revolt
The state senate of Columbia voted to reject a treaty that would've given U.S. wide control over a canal. Soon after a revolt broke out and the rebels won. Although the U.S. sent warships to scare Columbia. -
Signed Treaty
A Frenchman acting for Panama signed a treaty giving the U.S. permanant use/control of a 10 mile-wide zone. U.S. agreed to pay $10 mil. in cash plus $25,000 a year for rent. -
Building the Canal
On March 3, 1904 The U.S. Government began to build the 50 mile long Panama Canal. President Roosevelt stated they would, "Make the dirt fly!" -
Deadly Diseases
2 sicknesses semmed to kill many workers during the construction of the Canal. These 2 dieases were called Yellow Fever and Malaria. After many deaths Dr. Gorgus found out that the diseases carried by certain kinds of mosquitos. They got rid of all bushes and swamps. On November 11,1904 they saw the last patient with Yellow Fever that they would ever see till the end of construction. -
