    With the purchase of the Panama Canal would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Before this purchase you had to go all the way around the South American border and go through dangerous conditions. This canal would help our Navy defend our new territory and help our trade.

    3 days after the revolt a Frenchman representing Panama signed a treaty for the canal zone. The treaty would give total control over the canal zone. The U.S. kept their promise and paid $10 million and $250,000 in rent each year.

    There was many sickness in Panama two of them being yellow fever and malaria. There had to be something done for building of the canal could be made. A professional on diseases William C. Gorgas drained up swamps and cleared off brush where mosquitoes lived. Soon yellow fever and malaria were gone in Panama.

    Before the construction of the canal begin workers had to do many things before that. Workers included American but mostly included Indian from African ancestors. They had to cut through the Gillard Cut which was 9 miles long. Next they had to dam a river. Lastly workers had to raise the canals gigantic locks. These locks would change the water elevation so the boats could go along the change in elevation. Workers had to go through rainstorms and very hot days through out the construction.

    The Panama Canal was used to send products during the Korean and Vietnam war. Boats would transport goods and soldiers through the canal. About 15,000 ships went through the canal during the Vietnam War.

    The wage to go through the canal was raised to $1.08 per ton. Queen Elizabeth would pay for the most expensive toll for $42,077.88 a year after the tolls were raised. Richard Halliburton paid for the cheapest toll for the Panama Canal which was 36 cents when he swam through the canal.
