Following the success of the Suez Canal, Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique incorporated under French law on March 3, 1881. The purpose was to build a canal through Panama. The French started building the canal, but will end unfinished. -

This day the Hay-Bunau-Varilla was signed. This allowed United States control over a 10- mile strip of the Isthmus of Panama. This means that United States could build the rest of the Panama Canal. -

On this day the Panama Canal was opened to the public. This day was the same day it was finished. The United States will later sign a treaty to give the the Panama Canal to Panama. -

On this day Panama received the Panama Canal. This was signed off with the Panama Canal treaty and the Neutrail treaty. This would give Panama the control of the Canal by the year 2000. -
Panama Canal Expansion
On this day the Panama Canal had an expansion project. This will allow bigger ships to go through the Panama Canal. This is possible with 2 new sets of locks.
