Idea of Panama Canal
Americans figured out that going around the tip of South America to transport goods was too big of a hassle. Roosevelt was determined to build a canal that cut through Panama to hurry transport. Roosevelt first helped Panama win its independence from Columbia. This was the start of the canal. -
Panama Revolt
On November 3rd, a revolt took place in Panama. Panama declared its independence and caused chaos. Roosevelt took place in this war, and many were surprised by his role in the revolt. The U.S. soon recgonized the independence of Panama. -
Treaty With Panama
Three days after the revolt in Panama, A Frenchman acting for Panama signed a treaty fiving the U.S. control of a ten milke wide zone across the Ithmus of Panama. This treaty stated that the U.S. would agree to pay $10 million and $250,000 a year in rent to own the panama canal. -
Building Begins
The same video that everyone is usingThe building of the canal began. This was the start of a long, brutal ten years to finishing the canal. On this day was a start to making life for Americans easier for centeries to come. -
Problems with Buidling
The first problem to building th canal was the disease. After that was wiped out, along came the digging, and the cutting down of forest. Exposing of all the waste was a hassle. After the path was cleared, came building. One of the hardest parts. This wiped out most workers. Building the locks took a lot of material. The building was the hardest part of the Panama Canal. -
Disease Throughout Panama
The first problem with building the canal was the disease that spread like wild fire. Malaria, and yellow fever were the main concerns. Until, William C. Gorgas discovered that damp, dark areas were causing these diseases. Carlos Juan Finlay was one to discover that yellow fever came from a certain type of mosquito, just as Ronald Ross was to discover Malaria came from a certain mosquito. These men fgured out that these mosquitos live in swamps and forest, so those were the first to be cut. -
Opening of the Canal
August 15th was the opening of the canal. After about ten to eleven years, the two oceans joined. The canal was finished 6 months ahead of schedule. -
Summary
America needed a new, quicker way to get across the Atlantic Pacific ocean. This led to the building of a canal through panama. This gave bigger opportunities for everyone. The building was long, hard, and over 20,000 people died. This changed America for forever. -
