    Panama as a Province of Columbia
    In 1902 Panama was a province of Columbia. United States president Teddy Roosevelt offered $10,000,000 in cash and $250,000 every year to let the U.S build a Canal. Most Columbians disliked this deal because it would give the United States control of over 6 miles of Columbian territory in Panama.
  • Panama revolts

    Panama had been wanting to revolt from Columbia for years, they just never did. On November 3rd 1903 the panamanians finally did revolt. The panamanians asked for help from the United States of America. U.S. Gunboats sat waiting in the harbor of Panama to support the rebels. We also sent Marines to wait in Colon to fend off the Columbian troops.

    On the 11th of June 1903 a Frenchman acting on behalf of Panama Signed a treaty giving the United States permanant use of the 10 mile wide area across the Isthmus of Panama.We agreed to pay $10 million in cash and $250,000 yearly for this land.

    We started construction on the panama canal in 1904.President Roosevelt said "make dirt fly". In the attempt to "make dirt fly" we brought every man, every shovel, and every piece of machiney that we could get.

    Some of the struggles throughout the building were: the diseases, the floods, the Cordillera mountains, and the deaths. But the biggest problem would be the lack of a plan at the start. Our plan was to "make dirt fly" but we really didnt know how to make dirt fly efficently enough.

    Back in 1904 when the United States started construction on the canal, a problem we ran into was the diseases. Malaria and yellow fever. So a man named William C. Corgas decided to fight the diseases so he cleared through brush and burned grass and killed every single mosquito he possibly could and eventually in 1906 the disease cases droped dramitcaly.

    On August 15 1914 the Panama Canal officialy opens up and is ready for buisness. The workers completed the canl using gigantic locks to be able to change the elevation of the water, raising and lowering ships.
  • Summary and reflection

    Eventually we got the canal done and working. It took blood, sweat and tears. There were so many challenges to build it but we overcame and conqured.
