Vasco Nunez de Balboa
Vasco Nunez de Balboa, a Spanish explorer, explored the Pacific Ocean from the Darien Isthmus. He was then made governer of Panama, or as it was called back then, Dairen. -
Independance
Panama becomes independent from Spain and joins the confederacy of Gran Colombia, which includes Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. -

Gran Colombia splits and Panama becomes part of Colombia. -
Building Canal Failed
The French attemp to build a canal through Panama but failed because of financial difficulties and a result of the death of about 22,000 deaths from yellow fever and malaria. -
