Unequal Treaties
United States and Japan sign Treaty of Kanagawa. Japan must open five ports to American trade. Americans can live in port cities, but did not have to obey Japanese laws. Paid very small tax on imported items; "flooded" Japan with cheap products. -
Commodore Perry
Commodore Perry arrives in Japan and forces Japan toopen its ports to American ships to resupply. United States also demeanded Japan to begin trading. (Gunboat Diplomacy) -
Meiji Restoration
Emperor Meiji restored as supreme ruler of Japan. Japan begins modernization-- new army, sent people to study in foreign countries, developed technology (trains, ships, telegraph). -
Meiji Constitution
Emperor restored to most powerful. State Shinto religion. New land laws. People elected a Congress (Diet). -
Sino-Japanese War
The Sino-Japanese War started in August 1, 1894 and ended in April 17, 1895. The people who were fighting the war were the Qing Empire and Japan. This war had occured because both Japan and the Qing Empire wanted control over Korea. After the war, Japan got control over Korea. -
Russo-Japanese War
The Japanese were fighting the Russians for Manchuria. This war started on February 8, 1904 and ended in September 5, 1905. When Japan took over Manchuria, Russia had told Japan to return it to China, and Japan did. After Japan returned it, Russia took over Manchurai. When Japan saw this, they declared war against the Russians. In result, Japan defeated Russia and took over Manchuria, but could not gain reparation payments. -
World War I
In World War I, it took place in Europe. The two sides in the war were the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. During World War I, Japan still did not have a lot of respect from other countries, lack of raw materials, food, and land. Therefore, Japan wanted to participate in World War I. After the War, Japan gained German's western Pacific islands, developed a heavy industry, and recieved respect from the other countries. -

Japan attacks Pearl Harbor during World War II. -
Bataan Death March
Americans in the Philipines became prisoners of war. Americans walked for 65 miles. -
The Doolittle Death March
Americans flew on airplanes and attacked cities in Japan. Not very significant. The airplanes had to crash land in China. Some pilots were executed or kiled. -
Battle of the Coral Sea
Stalemate: Japan and the United States both lose one aircraft carrier. -
Battle of Midway
Americans intercepted Japanese coded message and the Americans ambush the Japanese Navy. This was the turning point in the Pacific War. -
Battle of Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands)
The battle lasted from August 1942-Februrary 1943. Thousands of lives were lost on both sides; which indicates the number of American/Japanese lives that would be lost in the war. -
Hiroshima Atomic Bomb
United States drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima during World War II.
