Attack on Pearl Harbor
Japan is empowered because of U.S. neutrality. Disliked United States because of interest in China and the Philippines. Oil embargo weakened Japan because of Japan's heavy use of their navy and planes. Japan's aircraft carriers allowed them to attack Hawaii. This attack dragged the U.S. into World War II because of the Tripartite Pact. Around 3,000 killed in raids. -
Bataan and Corregidor
On this date, the Japanese launched thier final offensive on the Filipino peninsula of Bataan. At this point, Americans were running extremely low on rations and were suffering from deficiency diseases. American General King surrendered, and the Japanese forced the prisoners on a horrendous "death march" where 25,000 died of wounds, disease, and maltreatment. Filipinos did not celebrate Japanese victory because Americans had promised them freedom, while the Japanese had not. -
Doolittle Raid
U.S. plan to attack Japan on their home soil. Plan was to ship them on a carrier to 500 miles outdide Japan, take off, and land in China. Main target was Tokyo. Japanese naval picket was sighted when the cruiser was 650 miles from Japan. Admiral Halsey ordered the planes to take off even though planes could run out of fuel. The raid was successful, with 13 planes bombing Tokyo. Four planes made it to China, one in Soviet Union, 11 were abandoned while the pilots parachuted to China. 71/80 lived. -
Battle of Coral Sea
Commander Rochefort had partly succeeded in breaking Japanese naval code. Decoded an attack on Port Moresby in New Guinea. Nimitz sent two carriers (Lexington, Yorktown to intercept the invasion force. This was the first engage,emt between carrier task forces in naval history. Sailors never saw the opponetnts ships. U.S. planes turned back the transports and damaged carriers. The battle was a draw after the Lexington was badly damaged and the Yorktown had a hole ripped in its flight deck. -
Battle of Midway
-Strong US intelligence leads to important turning point
-Japan wanted to sink aircraft carries that were out to sea during Pearl Harbor
-1/3 of Japanese air crew killed
-Many trained mechanics and crew went down with ships
-Allowed US to precede with Guadacanal due to a weakened Japanese army
-US lost 147 aircrafts and 300 sailors
-Japanese lost 322 aircrafts and 5,000 sailors -
Guadalcanal
-Allies began to go on the offensive
-Lasted from August 7th, 1942-February 9th, 1943
-Attempt to protect communication to Australia
-Japanase lost 3,100 men, 38 ships, and 683-880 aircrafts
-Allies lost 7,100 men, 29 ships, and 615 aircrafts
-Guadacanal became a major base for later offensives
-Japanese low morale and weakened elsewhere

Battle of Peleliu
-Part of the strategy to secure the Philipines
-Japanese created new defense strategy, develop bunkers on the islands and allow Allies to land
-Allies had no knowledge of the new strategy
-Most costly battle in the Pacific for the Allies
-The 1st Marine division lost 1/3 of it's men
-Allies lost 1,749 marines and 8,040 wounded or missing
-Japanese lost 10,695 with 202 captured
