I think he decided to use flashbacks to give more context to things. Like in Act II on the wedding day of George and Emily, it flashes back to the day they fell in love. However, I don't think the book would be much different if he didn't use flashbacks. I think the book would still make sense if things were in the order of events. Like when it flashes back on the wedding day, would it really make that much of a difference if it was before he went to see the parents? That is the only example I c
