Origins of Animation

  • Thaumatrope

    The "Thaumatrope" was invented by John Ayrton to get two images and create an illusion of an image that shows both images.
  • Zoetrope

    The "Zoetrope" was invented by William Lincoln to create a drum that would make a continuous moving animation when spun. The "Zoetrope" can come in a disc, pop-up wheel or barrel form.
  • Praxinoscope

    The "Praxinoscope" was invented by Charles-Émile Reynaud to create an extremely similar copy of the Zoetrope. It can only come in barrel form and has mirrors in the middle to reflect the image off the side.
  • Colour image film

    Photographer Edward Turner was able to create colour photograph image. With this, he was able to create colour film even before technicolor.
  • World's first feature length film

    "The Story of the Kelly Gang" was the world's first dramatic feature length film. This film had no sound.
  • World's first cartoon

    "Fantasmagorie" was made by Émile Cohl and runs for approximately one minute and does not include sound.
  • World's first sound cartoon

    "Steamboat Willie", created by Walt Disney, was the world's first cartoon with synchronized sound.

    "Fiddlesticks" was the first seamlessly animated colour cartoon.

    "Death Becomes Her" was a film produced using CGI to create photo-surreal image.
  • World's first completely CGI animated film

    When "VeggieTales" was produced, CGI animation was the only animation technique used to create the film and series.
