Order of events - The treaty of Waitangi

  • 6th of February 1840

    The treaty of Waitangi was officially signed by the british crown and 40 maori chiefs.

    1840 - 1860

    When the treaty was signed the english version was taken as the main version. So the Maori were not recognised fully and many chiefs didnt sign the treaty. Land wars began as settlers began to take land they thought they had bought.

    In 1858 Māori tribes chose the Waikato chief Te Wherowhero as the first Māori king to protecting Māori land.

    1860 - 1880

    In 1860 a land war broke out between Māori and British people in Taranaki over a argued land exchange.

    1880 - 1900

    During this time Maori looked at the treaty closely to try to work out ways to solve land problems. They petitioned the Crown quite a few times to ask for help but were told the problems could only get fixed in New Zealand. The first Maori members of parliament were elected in 1868 but had no power to change anything.

    1900 - 1940

    Maori become more involved in politics and in farming with Apirana Ngata. The treaty was mostly ignored by pakeha until Lord Bledisloe gifted the house at Waitangi to Maori. In 1940 there were 100 year celebrations of the treaty at Waitangi.

    In 1975 the Waitangi community said that the government had disobeyed the treaty and made suggestions to the government.

    in 1980 there were more protests about Māori treaty rights.
