Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954. She was born into poverty in rural Mississippi and was later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood.

Early Life.
Oprah Winfrey was born to an unmarried teenage mother in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother traveled north and Winfrey was forced to live her first six years with her grandmother in poverty. Oprah and her grandmother were so poor she often had to wear dresses made of potato sacks. At age 14, Winfrey became pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy who died in infancy. After that tragic event, she went to Nashville Tennessee to live with her father.

Early Career.
After winning the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant at age 17, she was offered an on-air job at WVOL. WVOL is a radio station serving the African American community in Nashville. Winfrey also won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she continued to work at WVOL in her first years of college. In 1976, she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV News as a co-anchor.

The Start Of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
In January 1984, she was invited to Chicago to host a faltering half-hour morning program on WLS-TV. In less than a year, she turned AM Chicago into the hottest show in town. The format was soon expanded to an hour, and in September 1985 it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. A year later, The Oprah Winfrey Show was broadcast nationally, and quickly became the number one talk show in the nation.

Oprah's Acting Career.
It was a dream of Oprah to appear in the 1985 film The Color Purple. Joining actors such as Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah excelled in the film and received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her performance. In her second film role, Oprah appeared in the 1986 film Native Son, also starring Matt Dillon and Elizabeth McGovern and Victor Love.

In 1986, Winfrey launched The Oprah Winfrey Show as a nationally syndicated program placed on 120 channels. In 1988, Oprah established Harpo Productions (“Oprah” spelt backwards). The following year (1989) Winfrey stars in the ABC TV miniseries The Women of Brewster Place. In 1998, almost 10 years later, Winfrey was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of the 20th century. Finally, in 1999, she co-founded Oxygen Media.

In the year 2000, Winfrey Launches O, The Oprah Magazine which is credited as being the most successful magazine launch in recent history. In 2005, she is ranked number one on Forbes’ Power Celebrity list. Lastly, Oprah interviews Whitney Houston in what Winfrey describes as the “best interview she’s ever done”.

On November 20, 2009 Winfrey announed that the 25th century would be the show's last. Monday, September 13, 2010 was the season premiere of The Oprah Winfrey Show 's final season. The 25th season premiere included flashbacks from the last 25 years, and included various audience members and their experiences watching the show. The final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show aired in the United States on Wednesday, May 25, 2011.
