Bracero Program
The United States signed the Mexican Farm Labor Agreement. Laborers were promised decent living conditions including food, shelter, and sanitation as well as a minimum wage of 30 cents in order to fill the labor shortage in agriculture. -
Mendez v. Westminster
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that forced segregation of Mexican Americans students into separate "Mexican" schools was unconstitutional. Paved the way for the desegregation of schools and the famous Brown v Board of Education court case. -
Hernandez v Texas
The Supreme Court ruled that Mexican Americans and other ethnic groups in the US were protected under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. It's the first and only Mexican American civil rights case handled by the Supreme Court. -
Operation Wetback
A law enforcement created in collaboration between the US and Mexican government. Dealt with illegal border crossings and increased arrests and deportations by the US Border Patrol. -
Immigration Reform and Control Act
Law passed Ronald Reagan to legalize illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982. Led to the discrimination of workers that looked foreign which lowered hispanic employment. -
California Proposition 187
Though it never passed Prop 187 was proposed by CA Gov. Pete Wilson in which a state-run citizenship screening would be established and would prohibit illegal aliens from public benefits such as hospitals and schools. -
Arizona SB 1070
Arizona law that was one of the broadest and strictest anti- illegal immigration measure that required immigrants over the age of 14 to register with the US government and and keep documentation in their possession at all times as well as making it a misdemeanor for an immigrant to be in Arizona without required documents.
