Britian started importing India's opium into China and trading it for money. The Chinese wanted to stop it so they started the opium wars to stop the British, but Britian easily won with their navy. -
Treaty of Nanjing
The Nanjing Treaty was an unequal agreement that was signed by the British and the Chinese. This marked the end of the Opium wars and gave money and Hong Kong to Britian. -
Matthew C. Perry
Matthew C. Perry was sent by the U.S. goverment to Japan. While he was there, he eventually opened trade between both nations after the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed. -
Treaty of Kanagawa
In Tokyo, the U.S. and Japanese government signed the Treaty of Kanagawa. This opened ports like Shimoda and Hakodate to trade with America. -
Open Door Policy
John Hay dispatched a note to Great Britian, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia talking about how there should be equal trade rights between everyone and China. The policy continued to be enforced for more than 40 years after that. -
Boxer Rebellion
It was a peasant uprising where they wanted foreigners to leave China and destroy the Qing dynasty. 100,000 or more people especially Christian missionaries died due to this group of peasants. -
Russo-Japanese War
This war was between the Japanese and the Russians where they were fighting over teritories in Korea and Manchuria. After the Japanese beat them, they annexed Korea as a part of Japan.
