Opium and Its Impact on history

  • Morphine is isolated

Morphine is a powerful painkiller derived from the opium poppy and it was isolated in 1805 by Dr. Serturner.
This evolution was opium's proper foray into the medical world as its go to painkiller for the next 2 centuries.
  • Codeine is Made

Codeine is the most commonly used opiate beating out Morphine and its bigger painkiller brothers. Codeine has a variety of uses from mild pain to diarrhea. This is good because of its general use it makes opium appear at least half-way decent with morphine and not the wars happening.
  • Period: to

    First Opium War

The First Opium War started in 1839 between the British and the Chinese. The cause of the war was the Chinese clamping down on the profitable opium trade. This evolution is on the more negative sides being one of the many wars started over a profitable substance.
  • Period: to

    Second Opium War

The Second Opium War was once between The British & The French vs The Chinese. Once again this is a negative evolution of opium as it was once again the cause of a war for profits and territory.
  • Heroin was Made

it was made in 1874 from Morphine and its original use was as an alternative to morphine. It is also one of the most abused drugs out there 80% of all users report having misuse of other opiates. This is mostly negative because the invention of heroin had led to a massive problem during the war on drugs and its a lot more addictive than its siblings.
  • Moprhine Formula Found

It was found by one sir Robert Robinson who had spent a lot of his life teaching or learning and doing chemistry which made him very good at his work. This was a positive development in opium history as it had provided one of the first synthesis painkillers
  • Morphine Synthesized Totally

It helped in dealing with severe wounds for the patient by blocking pain receptors and now that it is widely producible makes it much more common for the injured to get. This is a great development for opium because it helps others and is a great way to deal with issues involving serious pain.
  • Fentayl was made

It was made in 1959 as an IV anesthetic. It is legally produced and distributed in the US. This development is both good and bad its good because it helps ease the suffering endured during a surgery but its bad because during the war on drugs it is one of the most abused opiates.
  • Oxymorphone was made

Oxymorphone was made in the late 1950's with the intent to be a much more accessible painkiller. It's a more negative thing because accessible means addicts will try to get it.
