The first US forces arrive in Saudi Arabia. To protect them from Iraqi Invasion. If Iraq invaded Saudi Arabia, Iraq would control 1/5 of the worlds oil. -
UN meeting
UN authorizes any force necessary to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Iraqis are given to 15 January to leave Kuwait. -
Deadline passes for Iraqi withdrawal.
President Bush gave Saddam time to withdraw from Kuwait, to prevent starting a war. Saddam did not respond to the warning. -

After 100 hours, Iraq agrees to a ceasefire. Iraqi forces have retreated from Kuwait. The United States is satisfied with U.N. objectives and does not push on to Baghdad. Within Iraq, Saddam brutally crushes Shi'ite and Kurdish opposition. -
Iraq accepts conditions for a permanent cease fire.
