Operating Systems

  • Before the Operating System

    Before the Operating System
Before operating systems were developed, each computer ran on specific code commands. There was no need for operating systems, as computers were just used for simple calculations (The Evolution).
  • The First Operating System

    The First Operating System
The first operating system was created by General Motors, and referred to as GMOS. It was created for the IBM 701 computer. It functioned as a single-batch processing system (The Evolution).
  • IBM/360

    IBM/360
IBM launches IBM/360, an operating system that runs through a "family" of computer models (1964). This was the first instance of different computer models with the same programming instructions.
  • UNIX

    UNIX
Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie collaborated in Bell Labs, and created UNIX. UNIX was one of the first O.S. created in a collaborative setting, and it presented itself as a open way of sharing information. It was also free, which made it the most accessible O.S. (The UNIX Standard).
  • Apple DOS

    Apple DOS
Apple released a series of operating systems on floppy disks, which could be installed on any computer. The system unfortunately had many disadvantages, so it did not take over the market (14-DOS).
  • MS-DOS

    MS-DOS
The Microsoft Disk Operating System was created by Timothy Paterson. The O.S. became extremely popular, as it could be used on Microsoft or IBM computers. The O.S. pushed Microsoft into the corporate lead for public use software (Brittanica).
  • Mac OS

    Mac OS
Mac OS was the operating system created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. It was a UNIX-based system made available for Apple products (Mac OS).
  • Windows 1.0

    Windows 1.0
Windows 1.0 was the first public o.s. from Microsoft. Instead of typing codes to run each command, you could now click on-screen options with a mouse (Microsoft Windows 1.01).
  • Minix/Minux

    Minix/Minux
Minix was derived from UNIX to educate programmers. Andrew Tanenbaum created the program, but never made any changes or improvements. After about 5 years, it was updated and errors were fixed.(How-tos).
  • Linux

    Linux
Linux was created by Linus Torvalds. Linux was the first open source operating system, and therefore the most accessible (What is Linux?).
  • Windows 95

    Windows 95
WIndows 95 was a operating system that appealed to the consumer. It allowed users to hace more complex files and perform more tasks (Microsoft).
  • Chrome OS

    Chrome OS
ChromeOS is a Linux-based system, developed by Google. It was made available for Google devices, but not to be used as a user's main O.S. The devices were not extremely popular, but the popularity of the google suite dramatically increased (ChromeOS).
  • Windows 11

    Windows 11
Windows 11 is the newest operating system from Microsoft. Compared to older versions, Windows 11 makes it easier for consumers to share files and connect to outside networks.
  • Mac OS Ventura

    Mac OS Ventura
Mac OS Ventura is the newest operating system from Apple. It is only available on Mac devices, but it has made significant improvements with sharing data and files across the "cloud" and network. Mac is the second-most popular operating system currently used (MacOS Ventura).
  • Now

    Now
Operating Systems are continuing to evolve to make machine use easier. More operating systems are focusing on creating a larger personal network between devices. In the next few years, it is guaranteed that we will see more innovation amongst companies.
