    The Island of Cicones
    After the Trojan war, Odysseus and his men stopped at Cicones. They raided them of their food and other supplies. Odysseus told his men to leave quickly and only take what they needed but the men were so greedy, they took everything and Cicones' army attacked, killing 72 men.

    The Land of the Lotus-Eaters

    The Land of the Lotus-Eaters
    A ten day storm blew Odysseus's ship to the Land of the Lotus-Eaters where hospitable people called the Lotus-Eaters offered them water and fixed their ship. They also offered them food, their delicious Lotus flowers that make you feel as if Lotus Land is the only place you want to be. A few men ate the Lotus flowers and the others had to drag them to the ship because they wanted to stay forever.

    Island of the Cyclopes

    Island of the Cyclopes
    Next they landed on the Island of the Cyclopes, for water and food. One of the cyclopes who lived there, Poseidon's son, Polyphemus, invites them into his cave. He closes the cave with a boulder, and everyday eats two of Odysseus's men. Odysseus told Polyphemus his name was "Nobody". Then he poked his eye out and was screaming,"Nobody poked out my eye!" Odysseus and the remaining men fled. From then on, Poseidon seeked revenge.

    Aeolia

    Aeolia
    On Aeolia, the god of the winds, Aeolus, welcomed Odysseus and they discussed his long travels. Odysseus stayed for a long time and Aeolus bottled up the four winds and gave it to him. As they are nearing Ithaca, their home and Odysseus is asleep, his greedy men open the bottle and release the four winds, pushing them far away from Ithaca, back to Aeolia.

    Island of the Laestragonians
    Odysseus and his men landed on Telepylos, without knowing about the man eating Laestragonians that lived there. All the ships except Odysseus's went into the harbor and were eaten by the cannibal giants. Odysseus's ship was the only one that escaped.

    Aeaea
    Odysseus and his men then landed on the home of the witch Circe who turned men into pigs. Some of Odysseus’s men went to see who lived there and they were tricked by Circe’s charm and turned into pigs. Then Odysseus went to see what happened to them and Hermès warned him and made him immune to her magic. Circe was so impressed, she let the men free. Odysseus then stayed for a year because he was promised information on how to return home. Circe tells him he has to go to the Underworld.

    Odysseus went to find Tiresias in the Underworld and he told Odysseus to go through Scylla and Charybdis but to go through Scylla so only six men would be lost.

    The Sirens
    On their way to Scylla, Odysseus's men pass the Sirens. Odysseus got beeswax from Circe that his men put in their ears so they don't hear the lovely singing but Odysseus ties himself to the mast so he can hear the songs without jumping in the water.

    Scylla and Charybdis
    Then Odysseus comes to Scylla. They sail into the cave where Scylla is and Scylla strikes down with her six heads and grabs six men to eat. The other men are safe and sail on.

    Thrinacia
    Next they land on Thrinacia where Helios kept all of his cattle. Odysseus warned them not to touch his cattle but after a storm with no food, some of the men eat and sacrifice some cattle. Helios is mad and tells Zeus to curse them so he kills the men and breaks the ship, leaving Odysseus alone.

    After floating in the wreckage of his ship, Odysseus lands on Ogygia, the island of Calypso, the nymph. Calypso kept him there for seven years and offered him immortality if he would stay with her. Odysseus wanted to go home so badly that Zeus made her let him go.

    On his new small boat, Odysseus was on his way home. But Poseidon still seeked revenge and he destroyed his boat, washing Odysseus on the shore of Phaeacia. King Alcinous helped him and Odysseus told his story. King Alcinous helped Odysseus get a good ship and he was back on his path to Ithaca.
