A Forged Letter Almost Becomes Garfield’s ‘Death Warrant’
Chinese immigration was a really bad issue in the 1870s. In just a decade, more than 120,000 Chinese men and boys would come over to the U.S to work the railroads. Western Sates were anxious about the amount of foreign labor and democrats. 12 Days before the 1880 election there was a letter that was written by the house of representatives stationary. The Republican candidate told the Massachusetts business man (H.L Morey) that "unrestricted Chinese immigrants are good for the business".
