  • Tariff of Abominations

    The Tariff of Abominations was a protective tariff passed to protect industry in the north. Americans would buy their goods, European manufacturers would sell their goods at very low prices. It was very hard for American manufacturers to keep up. It was labeled the Tariff of Abominations by the south because the south was dependent on European trade and it suffered greatly with the tariff in place.
  • The South Carolina Exposition

    The South Carolina Exposition was made to declare all of the tariffs unconstitutional. The South Carolina Exposition was an essay written by John C. Calhoun explaining how south Carolina believed that the tariffs of Abominations were very unconstitutional. At the time that John C. Calhoun wrote this essay, nobody chose to believe him and everyone was against his idea.

  • Jackson’s Proclamation

    Jackson Proclamation was directed mostly towards South Carolina because of how they refused to pay taxes. In his proclamation, he stated that he was going to send troops to South Carolina to collect their tariffs. This was going to be enforced by the Military, although he didn't end up going he did want congress to pass the Force Bill
  • Force Bill

    The force bill was simply put into play after Andrew Jackson's Proclamation. The purpose of the Force bill was that it allowed President Jackson to go into South Carolina and enforce tariffs there with the help of the armed forces and Military.
  • The Compromise Tariff of 1833

    The Compromise Tariff of 1833 was a response to the Force Bill. The compromise consisted of a new tariff that slowly reduced the tariff. This Compromise finally made South Carolina realize that what they were doing was wrong and they eventually decided to accept The Compromise Tariff of 1833, which ended the Nullification crisis.
  • South Carolina Repeal of Nullification

    The South Carolina Repeal of Nullification was a result of The Compromise Tariffs of 1833. South Carolina Agreed to all of the terms set by The Compromise Tariffs of 1833 and signed it at the bottom acknowledging all of the differences between them and the north. This will eventually lead to the Civil War.
